I find his work intersting and also repulsive on some level. It’s well rendered (I’ve seen a few pieces in person), but somehow dead looking. And there’s something… leering about the way he presents his subjects. I could be reading into it, because my first experience was with someone who absolutely hated his work – she found it exploitative and dead-eyed. here’s an example of a piece that my friend hated.
looks like the title is ‘the pink tree’
i’m not a fan of every piece of his and i can’t even articulate why i like his work. but i wanna try. first off i think he’s got great painting chops. also i think his work illustrates the self-conscious construction of sexuality and gender.
also he pokes at our culture.
